Member Profile – Shelley

Shelley is a Mansfield resident, veteran triathlete, former volleyball champ and loyal member of the club for over six years. In both her personal and athletic life, Shelley is not easily daunted by a challenge and it’s clear from reading below that there isn’t a new adventure that she won’t embrace!

What is your Athletic Background? I played volleyball for 8 years. I played in Middle School, Junior Olympic Team, High School and at Bryant College. My high school team went to the State Championship every year and we won my Junior year for which we were indicted into the Maloney High School Hall of Fame. I started running in 1990 for a 5 mile race in honor of a sorority sister that was killed by a drunk driver while she was running.

When and Why did you Start Training for Triathlons? I started 14 years ago. My first triathlon was the Hyannis Craigville beach triathlon in June 2004. A 20 year old friend from the gym wanted to do a triathlon and did not want to do it by herself so I signed up with her. Back then, races did not sell out and you could walk up and sign up the morning of a race!

What is your Most Memorable/Favorite Race and Why?  My most memorable race was the New Bedford Sprint. I raced with a woman who had one leg. She was amazing!! When I thought to myself that I was tired…I just looked at her running with her crutches/braces and thought I cannot complain! She was such an inspiration that I remember her every time I am feeling tired at a race!

What Races are you Excited for next Season? I am excited for the Y Tri in July! I am usually on vacation that weekend, so this will be my first time racing it.

What is your Favorite Place to Run/Ride? My favorite place to run is at my Mom’s in Old Saybrook, CT. The run is mostly along the water with beautiful views of the Long Island Sound. My favorite bike ride is the ride to Bristol, RI with Monique as the leader!! The route is great and the stop for breakfast at the Beehive Cafe is fabulous!!

What do you do when you’re not Training? I have 2 children who keep me busy with all of their sporting events including volleyball, track, football, basketball, and lacrosse. I work as an accountant for a property management company in Attleboro, MA. I also am trying to do LOTS of yoga!!

What is a Fun Fact about you? My first job was working at my father’s garage in Meriden, CT pumping gas and towing cars! I learned how to drive by driving the wrecker and on my 16th birthday I received my license and was off towing cars all by myself! It was my best job ever!

Can you Share a Triathlon Tip?“Keep on moving.” Something will go wrong or something will happen different than you practiced during a race (ie. water in googles, getting hit during the swim, forgetting your hat for the run, etc.). Just let it go and keep on moving. Focus on the rest of the race ahead of you and forget the rest!!! Smiling a lot also helps 🙂

You would never train without your… elastic to hold my ponytail; Chew’s or Gu’s? Chews; Open Water or Pool? Pool; Swim, Bike, or Run? Swim
