May’s New England Tri Fit Member Profile spotlight is on Justin L. If you don’t already know who he is, you must be new to the club. He’s our co-chair, membership director, and frequent ride leader. He also teaches spin and fitness classes at the Y and NRG Lab, helping us to become and stay strong for our endurance endeavors. Although he’s taken a couple of years off of racing triathlons, he’s been filling that time with obstacle course training (himself and others) and racing. When he’s not pursuing physical fitness, he’s working, playing with his family, and cracking jokes. Correction … he’s a-l-w-a-y-s cracking jokes.
What is your Athletic Background? I played baseball as a kid, and football in high school, but became very lazy and out of shape in college and the years following.
When and Why did you Start Training for Triathlons? About 10 years ago I changed jobs and found myself with more free time than I had in years. I was out of shape, so I started running a little and biking a little to try and get back into shape. I really enjoyed biking and got more into it, eventually figuring I would try the triathlon the Hock Y put on (where I was teaching Spin at the time).
What is your Most Memorable/Favorite Race and Why? Definitely IM Maryland in 2016. A group of us from NETF trained together, got a house together, and did the race together. It took a lot of training to get there, and was awesome to experience it with a bunch of great friends.
What Races are you Excited for in the 2019 Season? For the past 2 years , I have been taking a break from triathlons and been running obstacle course races instead. I am currently signed up for over a dozen OCRs this year, and am looking forward to challenging myself in all of them.
What do you do When You are Not Tri-ing? Between my full time job working for the Norfolk DPW, teaching fitness classes and personal training at NRG Lab, and trying to keep up with my 5 and 6 year old kids, I stay pretty busy.
What is your Favorite Place to Run/Ride? If I have to run, I prefer to do it in the woods. My favorite bike ride is any one that takes me through the Dover area (although part of me does enjoy hills).
What Kind of “Off Season” Training do you do? I spend a lot of time at the gym doing functional training and strength training. This winter I joined a rock climbing gym and really got into indoor rock climbing.
What is a Fun Fact about you? I’m hands down the most hilarious person in the club. I’m also pretty good at putting together short videos to document favorite race memories.
Can you Share a Triathlon Tip? Relax and don’t take things too serious. None of us are pros, so instead of getting too caught up in splits, pace, rankings and speed, just go out and have fun and enjoy the experience. Try leaving your Garmin watch and bike computer at home for a race and you might be surprised at what you come away with.
What do you love best about being a NETF Club Member? 100% the people in the club. I love all the members and have met some of the best people I know through NETF.
